Healthy Holiday Eating
And, so it begins… the holiday season is upon us. Family, friends and, of course, food play an important role at this festive time. However, we need to be mindful of our food choices so that the abundance of seasonal fare doesn’t overwhelm us with a desire to overindulge.
Keep these tips in mind as you manage the holiday chaos:
Maintain a healthy sleep schedule. Lack of sleep may affect our hunger- regulating hormones, which may in turn cause us to eat too much.
Stick to your usual eating schedule. Eating at the same time each day helps keep blood sugar stable, reducing the risk of overeating. If your holiday celebration is scheduled for a time of day later than you would normally eat, have a snack at your usual meal time and eat less later.
Don’t skip meals to save calories. Doing so may actually lead to overeating if you find yourself famished and then overindulge to satisfy your hunger. Snacks on nuts, seeds, veggies or fruit to help curb your appetite.
Be mindful when you eat. Holiday celebrations can cause us to overeat by distracting us from how much food is on our plate. Slow down at meal time. Be aware of what you are eating and where you are eating. Focus on the food you are going to eat, breathe in the aroma of the food, savor the taste and feel in your mouth.
Enjoy the food of the season. The holidays come only once a year, so don’t be afraid to enjoy what the season has to offer. Just don’t overdo it. Sometimes a small taste will satisfy a craving.
Stay active. It’s okay to take a break from exercising for a few days, but look for other ways to stay active. Walking or doing yoga are always good options to keep our bodies moving and burning some calories.
